In 2003, the 50th anniversary of the 1st Meeting of Brazilian Anthropology (RBA) was celebrated at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro. Although the ABA was only founded at the second RBA in Salvador in July, 1955, a Meeting of Brazilian Anthropology was already being planned since the beginning of 1948 when the Minister of Education and Health nominated through a decree, dated 20th February, 1948, a commission made up of Álvaro Fróes da Fonseca, Edgard Roquette Pinto, Arthur Ramos and Heloisa Alberto Torres to plan "Primeiro Congresso Brasileiro de Antropologia"/The First Brazilian Anthropology Conference.

Meetings were interrupted during the military dictatorship (1964-1985). The 6th RBA was planned to take place in 1965, in Brasília under chairperson Eduardo Galvão. However, the military coup thwarted this plan. The 7th RBA only took place in 1966 in Belém under an International Meeting on the Amazonian Biota. At this meeting, in spite of the small number of anthropologists who managed to get to Belém, it was possible to elect a new board. In 1971, the ABA met at the First International Meeting for Brazilian Studies, in São Paulo. At the Assembly, it was not possible to elect a new board due to a lack of attendees. After eight years without elections, meetings were resumed. In 1974, the 9th RBA meeting was held in Santa Catarina, thanks to efforts from Manuel Diegues Jr., the chairperson elected in 1966 and Silvio Coelho dos Santos. The success of this meeting that brought together approximately 400 participants was considered the ABA’s true moment of revival. For the first time, there was participation from a considerable number of young people, entrants to the recently created post-graduate courses in Anthropology. From 1974 onwards, meetings started to be held biannually in even years.

The table below provides a breakdown of all Brazilian Anthropology Meetings with the place and date of each one, as well as ABA’s boards, its chairpersons, general secretaries and treasurers, indicating the respective periods for which the same were elected. In 1996, there was a change in the Statute so as to include a Vice-Chairperson on the Board.
