Each number adopts a comparative approach, bringing together work undertaken in different cultural areas. Consideration is given to interdisciplinary issues as well as to the practice and development of the discipline. Special attention is given to epistemological aspects.
These main guidelines have led us to publish both well-known authors and young contributors exploring new avenues of inquiry. We also publish the work of foreign authors..
These editorial priorities over the past few years have given the Journal des Anthropologues a valued place within the scientific community and among those responsible for research and the work of other relevant institutions. We are securing a growing number of subscriptions from national libraries and research bodies, as well as from abroad.
The editing of the Journal is undertaken by an Editorial Committee (composed of current and former members of the Association’s committee) with the help of a distinguished Editorial Advisory Committee.
Each issue covers a variety of subjects as follows:
A ‘dossier’ of ten to fifteen articles on a main theme which gives its name to the issue (single or double). Authors are requested to condense their work into short and clear articles of 25-35 000 characters or the equivalent of 15-17 printed pages. Once the committee has decided on the themes, a call for papers on the questions indicated is then published. Each ‘dossier’ thus brings together both solicited and unsolicited articles. Each article is then considered by the coordinators of the issue and the editorial committee. External reviewers may also be sought.
Research and Debates Unsolicited articles which do not relate to the main theme of the ‘dossier’ may be published under this heading. Presenting an innovatory theoretical problem or the results of field research, or contributing to a current scientific debate, these articles may give rise to responses allowing debate to be pursued in a subsequent issue.
This section presents anthropological points of view on current affairs: the political and economic situation, conflicts arising in researchers’ field sites.
Reports on conferences and seminars, information on research projects launched by French and foreign colleagues, information about current professional matters (the policies of research and teaching institutions, for example), and obituaries are also published under this heading.
Visual Anthropology, a section coordinated by Colette Piault of the Société française d'anthropologie (SFAV) which publishes lists of films as well as information or reflections by anthropologist filmakers.
AFA's activities sets out the action undertaken by the Association as such.
Efforts have been made to increase the journal’s distribution mainly by making it available in specialized bookstores in Paris and in the regions and through an exchange of content summaries between the Journal des Anthropologues and the other main social science journals.
The publication of each issue also attracts articles in the daily press.
This has replaced the Nouvelles brèves (“News in Brief”) which appeared until 1996. It provides up-to-date information on conferences and seminars, as well as advertisements, application procedures and sources of information relating to job offers, competitive examinations, professional qualifications and grants. Books and journals sent to the AFA are also reviewed here.
A special section is devoted to the presentation of the Journal des anthropologues. This contains the summaries of published issues and calls for papers for forthcoming issues.
The number of sections and services provided on the site will gradually increase.
