The ICA is a place where groups of professionals and/or students come together to work, discuss and study The institute currently has 400 members and a number of working groups which offer a forum for the exchange and debate of current socio-cultural issues. In addition the ICA entertains information exchange agreements with some universities (Universitat de Barcelona, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, Universitat de Lleida, Universitat de Girona), and is a member of the FAAEE (Federation of Anthropological Associations of the Spanish State). Since 2005 the institute has started to collaborate with the Government of Catalonia in its ethnological heritage programme.

The ICA develops its activities in three broad fields:

RESEARCH AND CRITICISM, through research groups, the organization of scientific events, the presentation of publications, the organization of round tables, etc.

THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL INNOVATION, through seminars and lectures given by Spanish and overseas anthropologists

PUBLICATIONS, within the framework of its interest in dissemination and promotion of anthropology.

Amongst the activities organized by our institute we might highlight the Fourth International Congress of the EASA (European Association of Social Anthropologists), Barcelona, July 1996 and the Ninth Congress of Spanish Anthropology, Barcelona, September 2002.

ICA PUBLICATIONS

The ICA publishes yearly the scientific magazine QUADERNS, which is distributed free of charge to all members of the Institute and distribuited to university libraries and other cultural institutions, and two numbers per year the free online journal Quaderns-e. Moreover, the ICA published in association with the Editorial ICARIA, two series of books on anthropology (ICA-ICARIA Series; Breus Clàssics de l'Antropologia). This editing activity has now to be continued with Editorial 1984 (Breus Clàssics de l'Antropologia) and other publishing houses.

OTHER ICA SERVICES

The ICA offers its members the following services:

* A library with 3,000 titles for reference and lending. The ICA keeps in its library the books legacy of John Murra.

* A library holding the main Anthropology journals, both Spanish and international.

* A monthly Information Bulletin, the Full Informatiu (news sheet) which informs members on professional activities, grants and prizes in relation to anthropology and other social sciences

* Possibility of using the technical resources of the Institute.
