“A millennial history, a mosaic of races interweaved along centuries, a great cultural and linguistic diversity across our region, have favored a particular relevance of the anthropological disciplines in Latin America. Therefore, even though there are different conditions for the practice and development of Anthropology in each country, there certainly is a ‘common denominator’ that grants us to conceive a legitimate Latin American Anthropology.”
These words -provided by the first president of the Latin American Anthropological Association (ALA), distinguished Mexican anthropologist Guillermo Bonfil Batalla- depict the need to create an organization that congregates us as a professional community: a socially-aware, equally-based academic space to share and discuss our finds, concerns and interests in the field.
MISSION AND GOALS
The purpose of the Association shall be:
Ø To support, promote and advance the anthropological study and knowledge of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ø The creation of a Member’s Network to further the professional interests in this area and maintaining effective liaisons with related sciences and their organizations.
Ø To bring together anthropologists from all subfields and specializations, providing networking opportunities across the broad range of the discipline.
Ø The Association holds the Foro de Antropología de América Latina y del Caribe, a scientific meeting celebrated every three years. This forum is intended to create a space to meet and discuss any anthropological productions developed in and/or about Latin America and the Caribbean.
Ø The Association will also promote and support any other activities the Executive Board and the Council of Representatives consider relevant to the Association’s mission, trough publications, special projects and various programs.
Ø Currently, the Association is promoting the research, edition and publication of two Member’s Network projects:
- History of Latin American Anthropology
- A Central Volume including a complete selection of the texts cited, as well as a Basic Bibliography of, at least, one thousand titles.
