The ABA meeting has grown from a small gathering to meetings frequented by more than one thousand and five hundred participants. At present, the ABA has approximately 1.200 associates. It played a decisive role in strengthening the field of Anthropology in the second half of the 20th century and it continues to reformulate and innovate through without ever downplaying its political and social participation and action.

The regularity of events and elections, constant renewal of its aims and its seriousness in dealing with anthropological issues as well as the quality of its meetings have allowed for the ABA to conquer a significant space and recognition in the academic community. For years, Brazilian Meetings of Anthropology and the association itself have received support from the Ministry of Education (CAPES) and from the Ministry of Science and Technology (CNPq, FINEP). Support from the Ford Foundation has been crucial too.

The ABA has an electronic bulletin and an electronic journal in foreign languages (http://www.vibrant.org.br/).

The Association awards the Pierre Verger Award for Ethnographic Videos, and the ABA/FORD Award for academic works on Human Rights. It also distinguishes some of its most prominent members with the Roquette-Pinto Medal.
