Anthropology is a small discipline on the island of Ireland and of relatively recent origins. There are two academic departments: that in Queen’s University, Belfast was established in 1973 (now in the School of History and Anthropology), and that in National University of Ireland Maynooth in 1983. The Anthropological Association of Ireland (AAI) came into being in 1987 with the objective of promoting the discipline by encouraging research and teaching, providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, and promoting acceptable standards of professional conduct.
In addition to anthropologists based in the two academic departments, the AAI has always included as active members people trained in anthropology or working as anthropologists in other academic and research institutions within Ireland and beyond. It currently has one hundred members.
As part of its effort to promote the exchange of ideas, the AAI organises seminars and an annual conference, which alternates between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (see appendix). It also publishes the Irish Journal of Anthropology: a peer-reviewed journal, which appears twice a year with additional special numbers.
